ANANSI RADIO CLUB

The ANANSI Radio Club is a group showcase of the talent that is currently hosted monthly on Oroko Radio. The hour long radio show features DJ mixes, radio plays and new music releases from and featuring members of our collective, while plans to expand into interviews and other audio content are well underway. Our show is a seamless blend of DJ mixes and smart conversations, exhibiting an open format that embraces a wide range of genres. This collaborative effort celebrates artistic diversity by ensuring that each artist and episode is a distinct and vibrant display of individual and collective expression. The show strikes a balance between music and word-oriented episodes, alternating between DJ mixes, music releases, interviews and written content like radio plays and poetry readings.

Several members within our collective bring valuable experience to the radio domain, for instance: Sayankah and Coco Em have demonstrated their expertise by hosting and assisting in the production of shows on Oroko Radio; Nardja Owens was a regular contributor to Shanghai Community Radio, both as a DJ and as an audio engineer; Daniel Ondieki has produced podcasts professionally for a wide range of clients including “Tisa Audio Stories for the Aga Khan Foundation”; Jay Jay produced and hosted the Array Shairi podcast highlighting the work of poets and spoken word authors; and Kadallah Burrowes has both produced and been featured in a wide range of audio productions, including Resident Advisor’s “The Exchange” and Santuri Signal.

Oroko Radio serves as an independent broadcasting platform, providing a unique space for musicians, DJs, philosophers, moderators, and content creators to articulate and share their ideas through the medium of sound. This platform is dedicated to fostering creative expression and amplifying diverse voices, contributing to a dynamic and engaging auditory experience for its audience. As a Pan-African collective, we in the ANANSI Revolutionary Collective are very excited to host our first recurring radio program with another collective of artists who share our vision and politics.

This collaborative effort demonstrates a dedication to diversity by ensuring that each artist and episode is a distinct and vibrant display of artistic expression. As a collaborative endeavour, the show aims to enhance the collective skills of the group and Oroko Radio by offering a platform for each contributor to express their unique voice and musical identity through sound. We try to strike a solid balance between music oriented and spoken word oriented episodes, alternating between DJ mixes and music releases, and interviews and written content like radio plays and poetry readings. We are also very interested in breaking the mold with more experimental work; for example, as a collective we frequently engage in tele-production and tele-performance and would like to do live sets on air, as well as immersive docu-fictional narratives that force listeners to question their sense of reality.
